Google My Maps

Create and share custom maps with Google My Maps.

Create a new map:

  1. Open Google My Maps (http://www.google.com/mymaps).

  2. Sign into your Union email account.

  3. Click [Create A New Map].

Search For Location

Type the location for your map in the search bar and click it in the drop down menu.

Title Your Map and Add Description

  1. Click [Untitled map] at the top of the left panel.

  1. Add a map title and description then click [Save]. These details will appear when you open the map again or share it with others.

Add places:

Map and save important places by searching for locations or drawing them directly on the map.

  1. Type the address that you want to add for your map in the search bar and click it in the drop down menu. A new, non-permanent layer entitled [Search: your search term] will automatically appear in the left panel and your results will show as green pins on the map.

  1. To add that pin to your layers, click the result. Then click [Add to map].

Add photos and more to your map:

Once you’ve created a map in My Maps, you can add and edit extra information.

Types of content you can add

  • Photos and videos

  • Extra info, like a description

  • Text notes about places on the map

Add and manage content

  1. Click a placemark, shape, or line on the map. In the box that appears on the map, click [Edit] edit.

  1. To add text, type in the box.

  1. To add images or videos, click the camera icon  ​​ and a pop up menu will pop up for you to choose an image or video.

  1. Choose how you want to add a photo or video. To add more photos or videos, click the + button. To remove a photo or video, click [delete].

  1. Click [Save].

 

Note: Popular places will have photos selected by Google Maps. In order to ensure that your map only show the photos you upload or select, you must remove the “Details from Google Maps” by clicking Remove.

Add layers:

Layers are a great way to organize your places, lines and shapes. When you create a Google My Map, you are using the default layer. This layer is untitled, so click [Untitled] to change the name of the layer.

To create a new layer, click [Add layer], and a new layer will be created.

Make sure you name that layer so you can keep track of the layers.

 

Move content between Layers

You can move map content between and in layers in My Maps. Click and drag the place, line, or shape to organize how you want.

Customize your map:

It is also possible to change place mark’s shapes and colors. To do so, click on the paint bucket next to your place mark.

Once you click on the paint bucket, you will be able to customize the color of the place mark, as well as the shape of the place mark. For more options of shapes, click on [More icons].

Add paths:

  1. To add a walking path click Draw Line Icon Screenshot 2015-04-06 15.37.07.png and click Add Walking Route.

  2. Select the different markers to draw the route.

  3. Click [Add destination] in the left panel to add additional paths.

Previewing your map:

When you are editing your map, you are viewing your map in the editing mode. To see how it looks like to the public, you can click [Preview] in the editing box.

Once you click [Preview], your map will be opened onto a new tab. If you’d like to edit some more, you can go back to editing by clicking [Edit] on the side menu.

Sharing the map:

  1. To share the map click on Screenshot 2015-04-08 12.46.23.png  on the left bar.

  2. Click [Change] and choose the option that best fits your needs. You need to change it to public in order for your map to be visible to others and click [Save].

  1. Click [Done].
