NameCoach Faculty Guide: Add as an Activity in Nexus

Add the NameCoach Tool

NameCoach is an online platform for recording and sharing name pronunciations. This article explains how to add the NameCoach activity in a Nexus course for students to record themselves pronouncing their name and hear others say their names.

Directions:

  1. Go to the home page of your Nexus course site and make sure [Edit mode] is toggled on.

  2. Click the [Add an activity or resource] menu in the Nexus section where you want the NameCoach link to reside.

  3. Select [External Tool].

  4. From the [Preconfigured tool] drop down list, select [Namecoach].

  5. For [Activity Name], type "Record Your Name Here!" (or something equivalent). activity name

  6. If you do not want to include this activity in the Gradebook for the course, then under Privacy, deselect [Accept grades from the tool]. If you do, leave [Accept grades from the tool] checked, and under [Grades] assign a low stakes value,

  7. Click [Save and Return to Course].

Best Practice

  • Record your name as well.

  • Announce the tool in class and encourage use.

  • Have completing a name recording count toward the students' grades (even just a little bit).

Viewing Recorded Names

Below the recorder, you will see a list of class participants who have provided name recordings. Faculty will also see an Actions column, which they can use to email students about their recordings.

Faculty can send an email reminder to students who have not yet recorded their name by clicking the [Unrecorded Names] tab and clicking [Remind All].
